The Madu River estuary near Balapitiya is one of Sri Lanka’s most quietly spectacular ecosystems, a 915-hectare sanctuary of mangrove-covered islands, narrow waterways, and biodiversity that sits almost invisibly alongside the busy coastal highway. Moving through it by boat at low speed is an immersive experience. The mangroves filter and close in overhead, the water darkens, and the wildlife – birds, water monitors, and river fish- go about their business with minimal concern for passing visitors.
